On Friday 13th May, a fantastic night of basketball was experienced at Auburn High School with the 2022 Summer Power Assist Grand finals.

Crowned the Victorian Men’s Champions ROAR provided a large crowd with a display of patience, skill and team work to defeat the young ROGUE FLARE team, who are developing into a very close knit unit and who will be challenging again soon for this title.  The score of 48 to 19 did not reflect the determination shown right to the very end of the game by the young team. The scoring was shared between 11 of the 14 players who took part in the game but dominating with 11 points each were Frazer Dawber and Max McGuire both from Roar and with 9 points – Hamish Smart from Rogue Flare.  Power Assist are very proud of the high standard of basketball shown by these players in the grand final but also throughout the season.  It’s always a pleasure to watch these young men play and this game was enjoyed by a large crowd.

Our Women’s Championship players provided a demonstration of the 3×3 format that they have been learning throughout the summer season and we’d like to acknowledge Erin, Karren, Chloe, Jacinta and Brittany for their achievements.  Special thanks to Hamish for his commitment to the coaching and development of these players.

Our Division 2 final was between Wild Dogs and Razors and was another excellent game between two strong teams.  Top scorers for each team were Anton Howard (Wild Dogs) with 16 points and James Bryden (Razors) with 17 points. Special thanks to Joel and Neville for their excellent coaching of these teams and for their dedication to the development of these players.

Division 2 Reserve was a new grade created this season promoting the top 4 teams from Division 3 into their own grade.  The Grand Final was a great game, and again the scores did not reflect the passion and energy with which the game was played.  Winning 43 to 23, Ashwood Jets played a strong team game, always seeming to find that extra pass to the open player.  Northern Magic certainly won the award for most supporters for one team – with a large crowd of friends and relatives to support them.  Even though this was the last game of the night, which started late, everyone stayed to the finish.  Top scorers were Alex Nason with 21 points for Ashwood Jets, and Jesse England with 10 points for Northern Magic.  Both teams will be promoted to Division 2 for the Winter season.

Due to COVID impacts our Division 3 grand final was postponed and will be played on Friday 20th May between Help Mates and  Thunder.

The first game of the night, supported by a large crowd was between Redbacks and Ravens.  And what an exciting game to kick off the night.  Scores were level at half time, and also level at the end of the game.  2 points were scored by Ravens in overtime to give them the win.  This was another fantastic game played with wonderful spirit and great sportsmanship.  Top scorers with 6 points each were Eleni Chrisant (Ravens) and William Bailey (Redbacks).

Power Assist relies on Volunteers to ensure this program is delivered each Friday night – and so to our wonderful referees, scorers, organisers and helpers – we all say a big THANK YOU !!

Winter season commences on 20th May – please make sure you have registered for this season (see News item on how to register) – the fixture will be available on the website in a few days.
